Google Step To Protect Android From Apple and Microsoft

Google the internet giant willing to spend US $12.5 Billion to acquire Motorola Mobility. What is the motivation behind this strategy? Google did this to protect Android, they coveted the patent to strengthen Android Platform.

In fact, openly, Google CEO Larry Page, in a press release called its an effort to block Microsoft and Apple. Both of these tech giants last time formed a consortium which managed to beat Google's owning Nortel patents.

"Our acquisition of Motorola will enhance competition by strengthening Google's patent portfolio, allowing us to provide better protection against Android from the threat of anti-competition launched by Microsoft, Apple and other companies," said Larry Page.

According to information reported by ArsTechnica website, with this acquisition, Google will control more than 17,000 patents related to cellular technology. More than 7,000 of them from Motorola's patents. "Motorola has a very strong patent portfolio that will help protect Android," said Larry Page in an interview.

Earlier this month, Google was accused some companies deliberately “overrun” them to block the development of Android. Google failed to acquire the 6000 Canadian Nortel’s patents, by a consortium consisting of RIM, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, EMC, and Ericsson.  Google’s bid for $900 Million USD, Google had to surrender to a bigger offer which is $4.5 Billion USD from the consortium.

According to Microsoft, they’ve invited Google to join the consortium but Google refuses.  Here’s tweet from Brad Smith, Microsoft General Counsel: “Google says we bought Novell patents to keep them from Google. Really? We asked them to bid jointly with us. They said no.”
